Lulzsec!

/sigh, companies need to up their security... Lulzsec are just showing how insecure networks are, they hacked the NHS just to prove this and told them hoe to fix it, /thumbs up to them

You're either a bit simple and think that's there's more to this than a server exploit or really well versed on the subject so can tell us more. I'm guessing the former but I do hope the latter.

Just find it funny all you people who think you know what you're talking about.:o

Well this is actually the first I've heard of a ddos attack.

Can someone explain in simple terms what they are doing?

DDoS is a distributed denial of service attack. Basically, you spam the servers of a website so much, that it can't handle sending out data, and cause them to crash. That's my basic understanding of it, without reading anymore. More here

As for them taking down the CIA website, I doubt it's even hosted by the CIA. Given it's the public face, no need for them to host the thing.

DDoS or Distributed Denial of Service use botnets or algathrims to generate hundreds of thousands of requests. These requests are usually targetted at specific websites which are usually incapable of handling the requests and anyone attempting to access the website legitimately is one of thousands of requests trying to get through. This stops the website from functioning and can lead to computers hosting the website to crash under the strain. Recently I believe DDoS attacks have been used in conjunctions with hacking attacks (Sony PSN network) in order to disguise the extent and nature of an attack

This method of attack is not a HACK where a vulnerability is exploited in order to gain access to the computer systems at an organisation.

Lulzsec seems to have shifted from hacking to DDoS attacks which is less defensible in terms of exposing organisations web security issues.

Obviously no one knows the details of the exploit, they're called zero-day exploits for a reason, but you have absolutely no idea what kind of knowledge people possess. Thanks for the insightful input I guess.

These guys have serious balls. I must admit, I am quite impressed they managed to take down 4CHAN AND the bloody Cia website!

I am not usually impressed by these sorts of stunts, but wow.

As a car analogy, they are trying to fit 100x the number of cars on the M25 as there normally would, and everything grinds to a halt because of all the traffic, and someone's bound to crash or break down making it even longer for everything to clear, until they just close the motorway down until they can clear everything out of the way.

The Jester (I'm not writing that in leet speak) is a guy whose CV consists mainly of hacking and DDOS'ing religious fundamentalist sites and other things that constitute a threat, in his opinion, to his beloved United States of America. These include places like Jihadist recruitment/training/information sites, and the ever lovely Westboro Baptist Church.
