Howdy. After some opinions here. Going to get the gf a new compact for her birthday next week, and after a bit of advice.

I have an F31fd, and have used an Ixus80 quite a bit. I do like both cameras. BUT i want to get her something with a wider lens.

iirc the lumix fx01 has a 28mm lens. are there any others that do. lens asside what is the rest of the camera like when stuck up against an IS Ixus of similar price? I'm looking to spend around £100-£125

i know nothing about the lumix range of cameras, what are they like for battery life and useability etc?

when the gf got her FS3 it blew my ixus 70 out of the water. mind you my ixus was getting on a bit.

i like the lumix intelligent auto, its pretty nifty..

I have two Lumix Cameras and can't really fault them to be honest (TZ3 and Fx100).

What kind of photos would she likely be taking? I'm not up to date with digital cameras (as you can tell by my two cameras which are around 2 years old now) but the Panasonics used to be average for night photos and there were better cameras available for low light shooting

I'm currently flipping between Canon IXUS 90 IS and the Panasonic Lumix FS3, and maybe a Lumix FX55 (has the 28mm lens).

it'll just be used for general photo taking, bit of pub / club photos, bit of just general photos during the day, she's a support worker so will use it at work from time to time. looking at the specs, the lumix cameras have a more powerful flash (better range) than the IXUS. I am tempted by the wider lens though. We're off to Northern Itlay next month, and last time we went on holiday she used my F31FD and was happy with that - but i think a wider lens would be better. (i shoot at around 12mm most of the time on my SLR)

In that case then I would go for the Panasonic. To be honest I don't think there is a big difference in picture quality at low iso settings which I am guessing is what would be used for normal day time photos. The wide lens is useful and that's my favourite part of my Panasonic compared to my gf's Sony Compact
