Just wondering if anyone mechanically minded can help shed some light on what seem like an engine problem that occurred today on my way home.

I was driving on an open road and thought I would give it some welly, I put my foot down and the car accelerated before suddenly losing most of it's power.
The engine also doesn't tick-over very well and sounds like there is some kind of knocking?

Below is a video I have just uploaded showing what the engine looks and sounds like. I took the video about 2mins after I got back, so the engine didn't even have time to cool.

The car has had a problem with cutting out at idle then cold for a while. It was recently put through an MOT and needed a new cat and some kind of new sensor due to emissions. These replacements however did not fix the cutting out issue at idle when cold, and now the car seems to cut out even when warm unless I lower the revs slowly, but it really seems to be struggling.

Its misfiring like a pig but sounds decidedly more mechanical than fuel/ignition related. Unless its blown a spark plug or something silly like that.

Get new plugs and try to diagnose which coil is dead. Ill eat a shoe if the cat is dead, just sounds like the garage is looking for someone to wear as a glove

Clutch?

I know thats what mine did a few months before I had to get the pressure plate etc replaced (pricey parts too!). :)

Thanks, I'll replace the plugs tomorrow and see if that helps things.

has this engine got coil packs my gues would be one or more coil packs have failed and or are old/worn. problaby best to replace the sparkplugs at the same time. It is a usual fault/problem the vw and quite a lot of other make engines.
The coil packs can fail overheating after a while or fail all together

my mk 4 golf used to stall at idle, a throttle body clean solved this

my 1.0 lupo has misfired before, a new plug lead solved this and it sounded similar though not as loud

def new plugs if you dont know when they were last done

do you have access to vagcom? youll be able to see which cyl is actually misfiring

Unfortunately not, but will change plugs tomorrow and if the misfiring still persists, maybe it's best to take it to the garage to get it looked at?

That's some missfire you have there. It's not firing on one of the cylinders, there are many reasons why this would happen. How mechanically minded are you?

It could be the spark plugs but that is only one thing it could be there are other things.
To fire properly it needs compression, fuel at the right mixture, spark and it all needs to happen at the right time.

Removed the plugs today to have quick a look at them, they were drenched in oil. My GF's dad has a mechanic mate, and he came to look at it. He thinks the 'rocker gasket' has had it and oil from the engine is leaking into where the spark plugs go.

He's going to replace the gasket tomorrow for me so I'll update if that was the issue or not.
Hopefully it will correct the issues of stalling at idle.
