M.2 drive heatsink/heatspreader - are they needed?

Just about to install the first M.2 drive I've used.

My motherboard is a value type so doesn't include a heatsink/heatspreader.

Are they needed for long term use or should it be OK for me to leave the M.2 drive "naked"?

Unfortunately it does seem to have a sticker just where it's not wanted.
