M.2 Drive not showing in W11

I built up new PC ...
The primary M.2 (slot1) is a PCIe-5 module and working fine.

I have a 2nd M.2 module that is PCIe-4 that I wish to use in slot 2 (PCIe-5 slot)
Yet it does not show in Device Manager or in Disk Management.

Now the strange thing .. I moved it to slot 3 (PCIe-4) and it comes up in W11 fine.

As PCIe-5 is supposed to be fully backwards compliant, what do I need to do to get this to work ?
I thought it might be the Motherboard (Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master), so I exchanged the motherboard, and exactly the same fault on replacement board.
Is there something I need to set in BIOS ?

Should work yeah and does sound BIOS related. I've not owned a Gigabyte board before. Had a look through the manual for you online and nothing jumping out (i.e. any caveats). You should as far as I can tell be able to use M2A_CPU and M2B_CPU slots. But it could maybes be something to do with lanes and availability. No harm in what you have done. Sorry I don't know more!

Does your Gen5 NVME work in the 2nd slot? (to rule out if it is working or not)

If you can't get the slot to work, RMA the motherboard and get a diffent brand.

As per OP .. if I put M.2 in slot 2 (PCIs-5) ... nothing shows, if I put it in slots 3 or 4 (PCIe-4) then the M.2 does show

Agree .. slot 1 nearest CPU is working fine
slot 2 does not show M.2 when plugged in
slots 3 & 4 do show M.2 when plugged in

As slots 1 & 2 are PCIe-5 wondering if they have to be the same .... you can use PCIe4 or PCIe-5 but not mix them ?
Goes against the idea that PCIe5 is fully backwards compatible

So your Gen 5 drive with Windows on does not work in the 2nd slot?

That could be it.
Slots 1 and 2 use CPU lanes so may lock them to gen5 if one is used.
Slots 3 and 4 use chipset lanes.

Yep ... W11 running from M.2 in slot 1 (PCIe-5 module & slot)
Blank M.2 (PCIe-4) in slot 2 does not show (PCIe-5 slot)
If it put module in slots 3 or 4 (which are PCIs-4) it does show up

I have raised tkt with Gigabyte in case it is a limitation that is undocumented.

Did you restart your computer after fitting the m.2?

Windows 8, 10, 11 has a feature called Fast Shutdown which hibernates your pc instead of shutting it down to make users think that Microsoft improved the speed of startup and shutdown. When you shut down a pc, fit a drive and boot up, the drive isn't recognised. Instead you need to restart it afterwards (or disable fast shutdown or do a full shutdown)

OK ... now this is odd.
If I put WD PCIe4 in slot b it is not recognised
If I put it in slot a, c or d it is recognised.
I also tried The Crucial PCIe 5 in slot b .... it works fine, and if put WD in slot a it works

With no real way forward to get slot b working with PCIe4 when there is a PCIe5 isn slot a ..... starting to look like Freddie64 comment in #11 that
Slots 1 and 2 use CPU lanes so may lock them to gen5 if one is used.
Slots 3 and 4 use chipset lanes.

May be the issue ..... as within refund period ... returned WD M.2 to Amazon, and ordered a 2nd T700 PCIe5
So hopefully this will work

OK update on this .... WD support engaged and they run some tools and advised me to return M.2 for refund - not supported on Gigabyte Motherboards
So I returned that and bought another Crucial T700 instead - and that is working.

That sounds similar to an issue on the MSI Carbon Wifi X670E board. It also has some issues with detection of WD/Samsung drives in slots 1/2. I've not personally experienced it but there's a large thread on MSI's forum about it. The latest was it needed to be a microcode update by AMD, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same issue.
