I recently upgraded my rig to ryzen and a new motherboard which has an m.2 slot but I'm a bit confused by what type would be best for speed.

The motherboard is a tomahawk max, what I think I worked out is an m.2 sata would be limited to sata 3 speeds so it's best to get m.2 pcie, is that right?

Cheers.

m.2 is the form factor (looks like a stick of chewing gum)
sata 3 and nvme is the transfer protocol (nvme is faster in benchmarks, but real world usage - not so much)
that being said, nvme drives are practically at price parity with their sata 3 equivalents, so it would be silly not to get the newer drives ;)

what is your budget?

During christmas sales you could pick up 1tb drives for under a £100, but like people have said real world use its not much different from a sata 3 SSD.
