M.2 NVME PCI-E - One or Two

Hi - my next system will be an M.2 drive using the Ryzen CPU and controller for Gen 4 speeds ... do I still need two drives (one dedicated to the OS, the other for Games) for top performance, or will one 2TB drive for both OS and games be fine performance-wise?
 
I'd suggest one 2TB. You always have the option for more storage by adding another drive later on.
No performance difference for games and OS being on same drive.

I think the logic for having two drives - one for the OS and one for games ties into the fact that older mechanical HDDs have slow access times so its more efficient to keep them separate (so the OS runs that much snappier) if you so wished to do that but with SSDs having 0 access time and that doesn't vary wherever the files are it's now not needed to do it.
 
Go for 1x2TB now... and upgrade again later, on these things nothing will run slower at all by putting OS and games on the same drives... TBH, that's not really been a problem since fast SSD's imho. That lot came like said above from old HDD's, also page files and low memory so it was always a good idea to split them.

I do continue to split but that's my OCD and nothing performance related.
 
Unless you're raising cattle by feeding them banknotes PCIe v3 NVMe is enough.
There's very little loading time difference between NVMe and SATA SSD, so PCIe v3 drive has plenty of unutilized bandwidth.

Especially if you were thinking about only 16GB memory, scratch that PCIe v4 extra and use that for guaranteedly future proof amount of memory.


You never 'needed' two drives.
Not really even in HDD time when there was enough RAM to avoid page file use.
 
One thing I've noticed about these drives they dump heat into your case and the can hit 50 degrees.
 
I got a nvme heatsink so far its in the 34 degrees Noe haven't had a chance to test it fully but if it can keep the temps down win win.
