M140i, Golf R, S3 - Anything else to look at?

Of course it is, it's the cheapest way to get an AMG.

I don't dispute the appeal of them, I'm sure they're fantastic cars but I just can't get my head around the price. You can get a LOT of car for £35k.

Hadn't actually considered that, but to be honest it looks too much like it's been driven through halfords covered in glue. Not to my taste :D

Have you seen one in the flesh? I wasn't a fan at first but after seeing one and having a sit in one they're great. Definitely a future car for me I think.

I've found the colour really matters on these. The metallic grey or blue look quite good but I don't like them in red. And I usually like red cars!

And the Boxster would be much slower, far less practical, harder to drive in poor weather and more expensive to run.

Plus, it's arguably quite good looking in the correct spec.

That was nearly OK, until I saw the Halford's special rear wing. Just WTF?

Ha, is a optional item... unlike the Civic / Focus.

And it's actually setup by AMG to work with the front winglets and spoiler lip at the front to improve stability... rather than being just a show piece.

A base 718 Boxster is £2k more than the Merc A45 and without the optional PDK (+£2k) it's 0-60 time is 5.1 seconds

"A few grand more will have you sitting in a brand new Boxster"

That was the point...

Exactly. Performance isn't everything, otherwise you'd buy a proper sports car, not a four door hatch. I'd much prefer the Boxster to an A class, it's just a much classier car. I like hot hatches, make no mistake, but when they started with all the wings, spoilers, winglets, quad exhausts and all that other tat they went from a decent fast car to a boy racer's dream. And they want £35k for them. Heh. Never.

With inflation taken into consideration, the current crop of hot/mega hatches aren't bad value at all. The problem, if you can call it a problem, is that technology has moved on so rapidly in recent times that, to get the best version of a particular hatchback, you need to spend some more cash. A few years back the run of the mill, 'go-to' hot hatches were all hitting 62mph in circa 7 seconds, and everyone was okay with that.

Now however, the warm variants of these hatchbacks can keep up with that same performance of the yesteryear hatchback kings, and similarly the current crop of halo models have similar pace to the super cars of just fifteen years ago.

The point I'm trying to make is that it's unfair to belittle the baby AMG as only being an A Class when clearly it's a substantial car and represents value for money in a lot of aspects (not all, I appreciate).

You do realise you CAN have both performance and practicality?

Fact of the matter is that an A45 will outpace a Boxster on the road, whilst being much more practical and as pointed out, be cheaper doing so.

You'll struggle to find a better performing car for the price.

If you want handling / fun, surely you're better off in a MX-5 or GT86 than a Boxster/Cayman... unless of course you're trying to pose :p

Surely it's 2+2's like the TT that should be slated for cost... they're just as expensive as these hatches, yet slower and you can't even fit 4 adults in!

Surely the RS3 Sportback would pretty much be the ultimate practical hot-hatch. What with it being essentially a mini avant, as opposed the the A45, which is simply an A class. I know where my money would rather go.

That said, I'd probably just go Golf R Estate if practicality was an issue anyway.

I don't know if it's the same back in the UK, but I'd argue the running costs of the Boxster being higher than the A45 probably isn't true.

My wife's GLA45 AMG which is essentially the same car, costs significantly more to run than my GT4 does, as Mercedes servicing on AMG models is absolutely outrageously expensive. They're almost up there with what I was paying on my Aston Martin.

If the a45 is just an a class doesn't that mean the rs3 is just a golf?
