I currently have a 4790k running on this mother board which is a Z97 ROG Hero https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-608-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2811

I currently have a 256 gb Samsung 840 ssd. (Not evo or pro, the original with a 500 read and 200 write speed).

I'm looking at getting this to replace it.

I'd like to find out what sort of a difference the 256 gb Samsung M2 drive will make. I know z97 won't give the advertised speeds that you can get with z170 but what will it give?

Also I bought this in an OCUK flash sale a day or so ago

Does using the m2 drive through this rather than on the board itself make a difference?

For you, sequential read and writes will still be around twice that of a sata based ssd. Now will you notice that in day to day use? I doubt it very much.

Very hard to cost justify these drives over a decent sata based ssd. Basicaly, if you want the fastest ssd currently on the consumer market and can afford it, then fine... Buy one.

Though in your case I think it becomes even harder to recommend one, as you won't get anywhere near the full potential out of the drive.

Not knocking these drives, as I've had one for a while now myself. Great as a boot drive on a z170 board running windows 10.

Please just don't ask me About boot times, as I don't give a monkies. One of the first things people seem to ask about, why? How many times a day do some folks switch their PC on and off? No offense intended.

Plus. If looking to buy one now, I would strongly recommend waiting for the Samsung 950 to be released (any time now), as these are consumer drives. Where the sm951 is OEM aimed at professional system builders. And nothing currently can read the smart data, secure erase them, or update the firmware on them. While the new Samsung 950 drives should at some point get decent support in these areas.

Loads of other threads on here asking similar questions, I'd suggest doing a forum search.
