I'm having an issue with an M2 drive not being detected on my new build.

It's a Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SATA 3 6Gbs. Build, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Asrock B650 PG Lightning.

I've flashed to the later bios and no difference ‍♂️

I've had a look at your motherboards manual and it's not 100 % clear but it may not support M2 SATA drives

An M2 drive is just a form factor and there are two protocols use to communicate. You have the older SATA like yours and the newer NVME ( PCI-Express)

I would make sure you have no other SATA drives attached and try using one of the two lower M2 slots as they are connected to the chipset. The top primary m2 slot will be linked directly to the CPU which is unlikely to support the SATA protocol.

Ah ok, that could be it then. It's in the the last slot near the bottom of the board.

It's this one https://www.samsung.com/uk/memory-storage/sata-ssd/860-evo-sata-3-m-2-ssd-1tb-mz-n6e1t0bw/#specs

You'd need to buy an adapter (M.2 SATA to SATA) for it to work on your board/system, as I don't believe that you have M.2 support for SATA deices on any slot. Don't over pay, ~£10 on an auction site. Alternatively get a much faster M.2 NVMe PCI-E disk for ~£40.

I googled Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SATA 3 6Gbs which brought up an old Sata 3 SSd to check the type interface the drive is .

Do the same and see if you get the same results.

But I don't need to do a Google search, as I work with the equipment day in, day out so I understand the hardware and the protocols. Also in the first line the OP wrote m.2 drive, an the fact they also said it wasn't detected meant it was more than likely physically fitting in the board. If you wrote m.2 Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SATA 3 6Gbs then you would have a very different result, and that was the total of the information provided about the drive in question.

Anyhow it is always good to gain some knowledge, even if it is a Sunday, so enjoy the rest of your day. :)
