Just a quick one really since I don't know the answer, on the section of the M25 West/Northbound near Chertsey you have all the variable speed limit/safety camera gantries. If there's no variable speed limit in force, are the speed cameras set to 70 or not functional?

I've always played safe and stuck to the limits there anyway but just curious if anyone knew for sure.

Cheers!

firstly post in motors

secondly dont listen to anyone, situations can alter in heart beat

im not about to say dont speed, ill just say do it sensibly

I always heard that they are on when the signs are, ie if the sign is displaying national speed limit, its set to 70, if nothing they are off

Completely forgot about Motors tbh, sorry chaps!

Anyone know for absolute sure (ie know someone that has received a ticket?) as I'm seeing a lot on Google about them being set to 80mph when NSL is in place and no VSL is displayed.

I'm not concerned about being caught, as I said I stick to the limits there anyway and let's face it on the M25 the times where you could possibly exceed the NSL are rare! It's mostly because I've been working in Surrey quite a lot the last couple of months and the commute from Glasgow brings me down the M40 and onto the M25 and into the speed gantries, you also have the same gantries on the M42 coming off the M6. Mostly curiosity!

Oh and cheers Rotty.

moved

and I understand that they are not in use when speed limit is 70

What I was told... though now our chap Will has said that... eeek! I never hover over 80 on the M25 anyway and to even be DOING over 50 would be a miracle.

However, I've been doing that since the gantries were erected and I'm fine :/

I did quite a long stretch of the M25 the other day quite late on (after 9pm) so not much traffic really. All signs were off, there were people overtaking me doing at least 90+

Probably not as I'm always being passed when I'm doing 70mph. I play it safe though.

in fairness Ive been through a non displayed sign at a little bit over 71mph;) and had no comeback (my bad officer) and I've also had friends in the office do the same that got three points, in fact i had one project manager from EMC who got 6 points in one day, the m25 to me is a massive lottery, you can tilt the odds in your favour by viewing which gantrys have cameras but how they penalise is based on experience - completley random.

Has anybody seen the new cameras on the A13?
There is a sign that says they are under test, so does that mean they wont be ticketing people?

Its annoying that they are 40 limits, I think more of it should be like 50mph

I do that stretch of the M25 pretty much every day between monday and friday. Most of the time there are speed limits imposed, but at the times when they are not I see a lot of cars going past at 75+ and not getting flashed.

Even when the limits are displayed there are times when I go through some of them over the speed displayed and not been flashed.

Incidentally, has anyone noticed that not all of the cameras along that stretch are marked on the tomtom?

A lot of the gantries don't even have cameras. You can see the ones with cameras before you get to them because they've cut a square into the back of the gantry with the camera pointing down at 45 degrees.

I do the J12-J15 stretch (M3 to M4) every week day, twice a day, and have yet to see someone get flashed. Although I do wonder if the cameras aren't like Truvelos in the respect that they might use infra-red.

I've always understood that any variable limit camera only functions when the sign is on, whether it be the M25, M6, M1... I got through each regularly and have never had any problems.

In fact, we have a little game we play with the M6 ones: If you go through the initial one at certain speeds this (either automatically or manually) triggers them to turn on as you then see all screens flicker which is the warning you have about a minute and a half to get through them into birmingham before they display speed limit signs and become functional. This results in a lot of fun :D

Disclaimer: I never break the speed limit *shifty eyes*

From what I have seen they flash and recently they replaced a fair few cameras with a much lower profile model making it harder to clock them from a distance, they just serve to make an already awful road so much worse.... :(
