M3 feasibility

We have a Warranty Direct policy on the 530d, with main dealer cover, and have had to make a claim. This is how it happened..

Car failed to start from warm. Called WD who advised us to take it to the BMW Dealer. Took the car to BMW. They diagnosed fault as 'Presupply fuel pump'. They called us to tell us WD had refused to authorise replacement as it was not a covered part.

I looked on the policy at the list of covered items where it quite clearly said in black and white 'Fuel System: Fuel Pumps'. So I called WD.

Guy was quite rude, and said 'Well it's not a covered part so what do you expect? Do you expect every part to be covered or something?' to which I said 'On a Platinum policy covering a low mileage car... err yes I do!'.

He argued that only parts specifically mentioned on the policy documentation were covered. I said this was fine, and then told him that Fuel Pumps are mentioned. He said no they are not. I said 'I quite clearly have the document right here!'. So he then said 'Oh, that whole section only applies to petrol cars, yours is diesel'

I then said 'So if its only for petrol cars, would you be able to explain why it also mentions 'Glowplugs'?

He then said 'Get the dealer to call us and we'll see what we can do'.

Rang dealer back, told them. They called WD, who authorised the work. We collected the car, had to pay the dealer and then send off a claim form. After 3 weeks, we received a cheque.

Now, they paid out, as they should have done, but they made it very difficult for us and this was on a really straightforward faliure which was absolutely blatantly covered. Had they not tried to screw around first I'd have been on here singing their praises. As it is, I'm not so sure.

Problem is, who else do you use? None of the others offer 'wear and tear' cover and would doubtless blame every faliure on Wear and Tear.

Call them for a quote but complain about the price and say you'd be interested but their quote is more than you want to pay. They'll come down, but still refuse it and say its far steeper than you expected and you'll need to think it through. They willl now constantly call you, coming down further each time.

Hi m8

You got the contact details for warranty direct please?
What do I do just call them, tell them my car and that I want warranty to cover everything or just their top cover programme and then let the bartering begin?

0800 731 7001

Ring them for a quote, say it is too much and they will reduce it. say ot is still too mauch and you will think about it, they will ring back in a few days with an even lower price

or at least thats how it worked for me ( and others on the forums )

I have to say that I enjoyed the e36 M3 than the e46 as it was more "M"

The car was sanatised so every footballers wife could drive it, which s not what the Ms should be about.

They are still fantastic cars and from a marketing sence it was a logical move for BMW to make, after all they are in it for the money at the end of the day.

I think The new M3 is going to be even worse, heavier and more chocked with electrical trickery. IMHO the e36 M3 was the best compromise between the e30 and e46 for rawness and comfort without losing the M feel.

I think my days of buying newer cars may have ended, I like working on my cars and driving them myself without the computer fiddling about. The only thing good about newer cars is they have nicer interiors as a rule.

Wow I think I have got old!!!

I found it the other way around the E36 being very dissapointing

Its all down to personnel prefference, the performance of the cars is pretty much identicle but the e46 with its softer suspension, more sound deaderning and greater weight doesn't feel as fast

After looking at the Stig lap times, there is a massive difference between the M3 and the CSL!

Hi there

That does not tell half the story in fact.

When the M3 was tested it was a dry track.

When the CSL was tested the track was very wet and to make matter worse the CSL was wearing CUP tyres which simply don't work in the wet.

It is believed that on a dry track track with those CUP tyres the M3 CSL will return a time in the area of 1:24 and with normal road tyres your looking at 1:25-1:26 so needless to say its hugely quicker than the regular M3 round a track. :)

Also consider where you will go from here if you get an M3. The quicker you upgrade cars the quicker you'll hit that wall where you can't really get anything better.

Rank up slowly and you can have many years of driving cars you think are amazing.

You could easily own something now like a 330Ci and find it great fun. Own it after an M3 and it'll be rubbish....

If you are not careful you could reach 25 with no way of upgrading other than to something like a Ferrari you cant afford. Doh. Every car you own after that will be a dissapointment..

Same reason why everyone thinks their first car is amazing.

Wise words. I always said if I ever won the lottery or acquired a silly sum of money I would start off with something relatively fast (like an R32 or a 330i) and move up after a few years.

Agreed,I thought something was wrong when it listed the bigger , heavier M5 with a time of 1.26.2 against 1.28.0 for the CSL!

had a '94 L reg 3.0 M3 in dakar yellow, what a beast. Very driveable car and the LSD certainly helped control those little bursts coming off roundabouts ;)
even @ 132k on the clock mine still RRd 287Bhp so the engines are bulletproof although there were some failures when they moved onto the double vanos setup in the evo
if you get a good example then they should be quite reasonable to run bearing in mind the amount of grin factor you'll be getting :D

absolutely, personal preference is the inportant thing, I found them the other way round though, the E36 seemed very lethargic and soft , having said that the one I drove was only a few days old at the time
