M4, 840 Pro or something else?

I have an Asus P5Q Pro motherboard. I know this only has SATA 2, but I eventually plan to upgrade to a motherboard with SATA 3. Even then, I suspect the real world speed benefits will be negligible. But will my current board support TRIM?

I had considered the Crucial M4 for some time, but the Samsung 840 Pro is newer. So my head tells me the Samsung is newer technology therefore is (should) be better, faster and more reliable. My heart tells me the Crucial is proven technology, even if the recent firmware updates have been iffy.

But I wonder if there is anything else better?

In the long term, I am after reliability. I want a 256GB, future proofing my storage needs. Windows 7 will be installed on it. I don't know when I will be upgrading my motherboard, but it shouldn't be too long.

For my file hoarding, I intend on buying a 2TB harddrive, to replace my 1TB.

Your comments, criticisms and suggestions are all welcome.

the samsung 830 256gb is a middle ground ssd,not as fast as the 840 pro but faster/more reliable than an m4 so its worth i thought if the 840 pro is out of budget,if not then the 840 pro is the best

Any thoughts on the Plextor M5 Pro, specifically the PX-256M5P model? Reviews on it look very good indeed, and the price certainly seems reasonable!

it should be fine, trim is built into windows anyway so it doesnt matter what board you use, aslong as it has a sata port it will run

most youll see on sata2 is around 250-280mb read/write,to see full rated speeds of the drive you need a board with intel sata3 ports

set to ahci in the bios first/install windows and then instal the latest intel rapid storage drivers and thats it
