M4 SSD Crashes (pc freeze)

I recently bought a M4 128GB, I removed my current 1TB drive and did a fresh install on the SSD, all went fine until I tried to play a game and the PC would lock up and freeze. I tried multiple drivers for sound, graphics etc nothing seemed to make a difference.

I then tried connecting the SSD to a 3Gb/s port rather then a 6Gb/s one, this appeared to solve the problem, until the other night (about 2 weeks later) when the crash reappeared this time whilst watching a stream, still works fine within games tho?

The crashes themselves are very strange, first the sound starts to crackle and breakup until the PC freezes completely, when the PC is frozen moving the mouse makes a strange buzzing noise in my headset. Nothing is shown in the event viewer after a restart.

The only thing i have not tried is a BIOS update as I have heard that this SSD can have problems being detected on my mobo.

So can anyone think of any more suggestions to try from here?, maybe someone has had similar problems?

Basically is my drive faulty or should i just update the BIOS?

Thanks.

Specs:
MSI Z68A-GD80 b3
i7 2600K
GTX580 (latest drivers)
Crucial M4 128 GB(boot drive)
Samsung Spinpoint 3 1TB(Data drive)
8GB Corsair XMS 3 RAM
Corsair AX850 PSU

What firmware for the M4? Is this the intel SATA port? Is it AHCI? Are you using the rapid storage drivers?

Knew I would forget some details in this thread:p

Latest firmware on the M4 first thing I did,

Yes the Intel Sata port In AHCI

I will try the rapid storage drivers, could a lack of this cause the error?

thanks

Not too sure, I am AMD currently but a friend of mine uses them and has no issues so I thought to suggest it as a possible solution.

Check windows update, and check the optionals section because i thought i had all updates but then i saw a load in the optionals section and when they were installed i thought ok done but nope still a few more and then more, so keep spamming windows update and check optionals section maybe theres some things there needed as knock on wood my freezes havent occured since i done that.

000F is the latest for m4 btw incase you thought it was somit else.

Also check windows event logs by using administrator tools in control panel then event viewer and check crititcal and error sections and google em if not sure but list critical ones here maybe and well see how they are.

Yes im on 000F firmware,

Nothing in windows update and nothing shows as critical in event viewer at all.

EDIT:

I took the plunge and updated my BIOS to the latest, still having the same crashes occur .

Ah ok. Worth a shot, as so far no freezes when i did the windows update stuff that i missed. Tho who knows if it will come back. Only thing i can think of is check for chipset drivers for your motherboard and install em.

Check for hardware conflicts.
Check sata cables and ports.
Check overclock if you have one.
Do a scan disc for ur drive. As well check SMART info etc.

So it worked for a few hours then crashed again:(

Ive gone back to the 3GB/s port, at least its a lot more stable if slower.

Any other suggestions that i can try on another day?

Nope, stick with the Intel controlled. Hopefully turning on hot plugging will solve the stability issue. Very weird that it's happening.

Okay thanks,

I have applied hot plugging to my current port on 3GB/s

Ive just put the PC back together I i will try again tomorrow.

Okay now I am really confused:S i had set everything back to the way it was yesterday morning, so at least i could play games. However now its crashing on that as well!

So Ive set reset BIOS to default (removed my OC etc), set everything backup again AHCI mode etc. Still happens! Starting to fear a faulty SSD:( or maybe a faulty graphics card that just happen to die the same time I installed the SSD.

I'm at a loss,

I will remove the SSD and see if I get crashes booting from my HDD, then at least i can eliminate the graphics card.

Looks like its probly my graphics card:(

Removed the SSD and set everything back to how it was before i installed it, (this set up has worked perfect for 12 months)and now its crashed again.

I get this error though:

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Upon searching it could be a number of things:mad:

Thanks all for the help, resolved it now i think 3 days stable no crashes.

I just had to reseat the graphics card i must have knocked it when i plugged in the sata cable for the SSD.
