I need to identify cylinder 4 on a friends E90 330d. That is the one showing a glow plug fault. Whilst cylinder 1 (injector 1) is often at the timing chain end (ie, near the radiator), most online literature (nothing BMW) says that the GP controller lists the GPs around the other way.

So:
Cylinder 1, injector 1 is Glow Plug 6
Cylinder 2, injector 2 is Glow Plug 5
Cylinder 3, injector 3 is Glow Plug 4
Cylinder 4, injector 4 is Glow Plug 3
Cylinder 5, injector 5 is Glow Plug 2
Cylinder 6, injector 6 is Glow Plug 1

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks

I've always been told on bmw m50/m52/m54/m20/m44 ie. most of the engine range, that cylinder no 1 is at the timing chain end, so cylinder 4 is 4th back from front of car.

Was the case on my m50b25, m52b28 and friends m54's. I've done a lot of work on x20ds, x3ds and have always used front to back numbering, and haven't been out.

Citroen and peugoet used to measure from the flywheel end, but think they're in the minority. I always use timing chain end as number 1.

Hope this is some help

I agree, this is correct, but if you trace the glow plug controller (which is numbered) to each cylinder, they are reversed. So, even though I almost know GP 4 is cylinder 3, it just seems backwards for the Germans.

I guess the easiest way is to unplug the front GP and see what cylinder error is thrown.

Why don't you test cylinder 2 and 4 with a multimeter to see which plug is dead?
