If you could have a top-spec Mac Book Pro, what other software and devices would you have along with it to make you truly mobile? Is the iPhone a worthy contender? Is there something better/more compatible?

Internet and email access on the go, and then the link between the two (or more if there's something worth getting) devices.

I don't think you can tether(sp) an iphone to a laptop for internet use, if thats what you're driving at. Any normal 3G phone with a data plan would do.

I'm quite happy to have a contract with o2 for the iPhone if necessary, I'm just curious as to whether the Mac and iPhone is the best combination for mobility, ie what will give me the best tools (email, calendar, internet) while on the move and then when back at base what offers the best sync options (of emails sent/received, calendars events added/removed etc). The whole shebang really.

Well, iPhone won't synchronise contacts + calendar events over-the-air, ie via your mobile network. I think it may do when software v2 is released in June, allowing full OTA connectivity with Exchange.

At the moment, the iPhone will only sync contacts and calendars when connected to your computer.

So, if over-the-air sync is important to you (eg, secretary pushing calendar invites out to you), then Blackberry/ Windows Mobile is your best bet. WinMo syncs well with the Mac if you buy a piece of shareware called Missing Sync).

If you're not bothered about that then the iPhone could be a good bet

They're missing a trick with .mac there.. they already offer remote access via .mac for macs so I assume that it will not be long before .mac offers iPhone OTA syncs..

You could get one of those USB modem sticks from 3 or vodafone and then youd have mobile broadband pretty much anywhere. Link to 3 mobile broadband

No need. Any decent phone with 3G will "dial-up" over bluetooth, no drivers required.

Worked like a dream on the Nokia n70 and S-E K850i that I've used.

That said the latest T-mobile offer looks a bit tempting...

My Blackberry has dial up... however that's a pain.

For work it would have been great to use the laptop through it.. so just stuck with the normal BB connectivity and browsing through minuscule screen..

I've no need for instant updates with regards to calendar events, but i want something that will serve me best if I've been out, added some new content to the mobile device (contact, meeting, etc) that will sync nicely with the Mac when i return. Email access on the road is essential too.

That sort of thing.

iPhone or Blackberry?

I'm not too familiar with the Blackberry..what's the latest/greatest one to have?

Blackberry is really a corporate device in my view. I get it with work. OTA email, calendar sync however (annoyingly) contacts etc are sync'd on docking.

iPhone sounds better for you, careful of the data charges outside when roaming.

My BB is the only reason I don't have an iPhone.. mainly because (a) work pays for everything, (b) I won't carry two phones. It's also got GPS...

When the SDK is released, I imagine the iPhone will set itself over time to be the only portable device I actually need. I take my laptop everywhere with me, and I probably always will because I use it as a development environment when I'm away from home and I don't need an internet connection to do that.

So yeah, sounds to me that iPhone will probably fit your bill, and the SDK will only improve that.

The iPhone seems like a rubbish solution as it's only 2G... Just get a decent HSDPA enabled phone with Bluetooth, preferably Nokia.
