My wife has had a (very sturdy) Macbook Pro since 2007 and is now thinking of upgrading. I said I would look into it for her and I have a few questions:

  1. How sturdy are the current macbook airs and macbook pros? My wife's current macbook is clearly incredibly sturdy, we have two young kids and it has been knocked onto the floor numerous times, are the current macs as "sturdy"?
    .
    .
  2. When would be a good time to buy? I assume the best time is soon after the model has been updated. has this recently happened for the 13" macbook pro or the 13" macboook air?
    .
    .
  3. How "fast" does a macbook air feel? My wifes current macbook is a 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb of RAM. I notice the macbook airs only have 1.6ghz processors (with 4gb) of RAM. How much should I be reading into the processors speed? would it feel faster than what she currently has? I assume the extra RAM and SSD will make a big difference.

  4. Slightly different topic - one of the reasons my wife is thinking of upgrading right now is that skype is no longer working with OS 10.5.8. Anyone know of a workaround for this? is it possible to just find an earlier version of skype?

1) Both are very sturdy. Pro more so.
2) Both have been updated recently, so its a good time to buy.
3) All the Macs have super fast PCI-E based SSDs, so they fly along. Clock speed isn't that big of a deal, but it depends on what she will be using it for.

The Air would be fine for all those. SSDs do make a big difference. If you wanted to future proof it a bit more, I'd definitely go for 8Gb ram.
