Mac Mini for HTPC

NHSdiscounts.com used to list it and it had a link to the Apple store with reduced prices, but they don't anymore. You used to be able to get it at the Apple stores as well but as its not listed anymore i guess maybe they've stopped doing discounts for NHS staff altogether...

Damn, the amount of stuff I've bought through the Apple Store and not known they did NHS discounts. Cheers anyway I'll keep my eye out in future.

I picked up my Mini on a recent trip out to the states :) Gotta love that 2:1 price ratio at the moment!

Hooked upto my 40" Samsung 1080p LCD telly, looks amazing and great for iTunes playback through my hifi and watching downloaded content. As others have said it will struggle with HD material, 720p is watchable although I found 1080p unusable in most cases (however my MBP has no trouble with it, suppose thats due to it having a "proper" graphics card).

Still prefer the upscaling of my proper DVD player though for watching SD discs on, its less noisy and far far more detailed than the Mac's efforts.

 I've just realised, i don't know what inputs or anything to use for audio. I'm planning to play audio through the tv's speakers, how do i do this?

Probably get a 3.5mm phone jack to phono leads (red and white ones). Then the red and white ones will plug into your TV's audio in jacks (phono in ?). The 3.5mm will go into the mini's headphone jack.

I think thats the way.

@ richieboy.

Take a look at Sofa Control if you interested in going the HTPC route.

It allows control of Front Row, but extends control to the OS.. so you can do everything from the sofa :D

Also, for codecs I recommend:

Flip4Mac (WMV)
Perian 1.0 (All common codecs including XVID and the like)

I've just had a look at my TV inputs:
It has a "PC Audio IN" which looks like a normal 3.5mm jack port? I guess i just use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable? If that makes any sense?

I'm not using a Mini at the moment but thats what i do, 3.5mm jack from PC to 3.5mm PC audio in on TV - works a treat.

Just bought a 3.5mm->3.5mm cable and the 2.0ghz Mac mini :) Well pleased since I was only expecting the £400 version but my parents have bought the £500 :D

I wish people would buy me the top spec stuff!

I don't think i would have got the top spec if the guy didn't give me 10% discount when he was only meant to give me 6% discount. So overall it cost £450 so its all good :) Although I want a Apple Wireless Keyboard + Mouse but it is way overpriced!
