Thinking of getting a Mac Mini M4 base model £499 and then a dock eg., Minisopuru iExpandMate Mac Mini Dock which has "SSD enclosure that supports M.2 NVME SSDs of up to 8TB and is compatible with most SSD sizes (2230/2242/2260/2280)" so was thinking of adding Crucial P310 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe

Total cost around £700

It's just for basic office work, browsing and storage of photos. Wanted something future proof, is this overkill or reasonable? Not really up to date with current market, it's to replace a macbook that is currently used as a desktop with external monitor.

@Raymond Lin must have had every dock on the market. :D

The base model Mac Mini is a very capable machine and will do everything you need. Although if future proofing, I've be tempted to bump the base storage, add more RAM, and consider a 10 GbE NIC - but this obviously adds to the cost.
