Mac Mini Questions

Hi Echo,
If your primary focus is games, why go for OSX? I use it for work (I am a programmer) and because it is built on Unix and because I find it more pleasureable to deal with than windows. But for games I will be sticking with windows. I also need windows for all manner of stuff involving DVDs as the software on OSX is lacking. So I will not be getting a MacPro (sadly :( ).
I think you will probably save £500-£1000 by going for a PC gaming rig and choosing components wisely over splashing out on a MacPro. When the time comes for the next PC upgrade I will be replacing my black Sonata case with one of those MacPro clones with wheels from LianLi so I can pretend its a Mac (sad, I know.....).
I also paid £700 for my mini. I should probably have waited for the Macbooks. Anyway its very soon going to be my HTPC, connected up to a 500GB Mybook and an elegato TV hybrid. :)
cheers,
solp.

Hmm, I'm going to get a Macbook (hopefully before the end of the year if they include Core 2 Duo) and then build a new gaming rig after Vista's settled in a bit.

Got some more questions:

  • What's the correct procedure for uninstalling an application? I installed DivX a day or two ago but found it more or less useless. When I dragged its icons in Applications to the trash can and then did a Spotlight search for 'divx', it still found about 15 or so files dotted all over the place, including the .component folder used by Quicktime (i.e. the core codec!). Did I do the right thing and was the software behaving badly, or should it have come with an uninstaller? In addition, when I tried to delete some of these files I got 'in use' errors.
  • Is there a way to get Front Row to ignore the awfulness that is iTunes and merely read media files via folders? I tried adding a few symlinks to artist folders shared on my main PC in my Music folder but Front Row still didn't pick them up.
  • Is it possible to build and run Linux applications on OS X relatively easily? So far I've not found any half-decent free text editors and I'd like to have a go at building SciTE if possible.
  • Why can't I cut / paste files in Finder? :p

If I get no replies to these questions I might move them into another thread as this one's starting to get a bit OT and rather long :) As always, thanks for all the help!

If the application is installed using drap 'n' drop to the Applications folder, then dragging it to the Trash is the correct way to uninstall it.

If it runs an installer-wizard thingy akin to Windows, then it should also have an uninstaller wizard. You could try re-running the install program and seeing if it then gives you an option to uninstall.

Not near a Mac right now so can't give you specifics on the DivX method.
