Hey i've just purchased a Macbook 2nd hand and i can not get the internet to work i get this message :

"Safari can not connect to the Proxy server"

It says to go to Safari preferences then to advanced and to change the proxy settings however the button is greyed out.

Now i noticed on System > Accounts > Login items There is a item

smb://4062-xserve-01.rts.school.leeds.pri/mediashare

Could this be the proxy it is connected to? And how do i go about removing this as it says "you cannot change login items because login items prefrences are".. ( cant see the rest )

Thanks in advance.

That appears to be a samba share, shouldn't affect connectivity.

Try this:

System Preferences > Network > SELECT THE INTERFACE REQUIRED > Advanced > Proxies > CLEAR ALL CHECK BOXES.

Let us know if that sorts it :)

I'm in the "Proxies" bit and there is nothing checked and there is no information on any of the list of protocol's.

FTP Proxy
Web Proxy ( HTTP)
etc etc

Could i use a Snow leopard disk can i do a fresh install to wipe the laptop with that and set everything to default? Its running 10.5.8 at the moment.
