Hi

My home PC is on its last legs (Athlon XP 1900+ 512 MB RAM yadda yadda) and I need to replace it.... I am familiar with Linux already and this PC currently runs Edgy Ubuntu as its only OS.

Whatever I get I am going to try and avoid Windows (But will probably have to have it). Now what I want to know is whether I am better building a meaty system (2-4 GB RAM, uber fast CPU, couple of very large HDs in RAID- basically Mac- money spec PC) and running that dual booting or just buying a Mac and dual booting Windows on that if the need arises?

I guess the main things I will be using it for is image manipulation, office work, managing my music colletion, videos/ intenet, that sort of thing (Not really in to gaming).

Which is the better solution?

Thanks

If you can do everything you need to do in Linux then I'd go with Linux on the value for money side, and given that you already use Linux (ie you know whether it's for you or not). End of the day I suppose it depends which OS environment you prefer - I'm pretty impressed with OSX on my Macbook (enough that I haven't done my usual thing and tried to put Linux on it) but I miss the freedom and vast amount of free software that Linux has. Either way, they're both good solutions for what you suggest :)

This is more or less my problem as I am dual booting with Windows XP and Ubuntu. The trouble that I need the accounts program in Windows and the ASccess databases but I can do everything else in Linix. I am finding that I am not really doing much with the Linux as I need the Windows programs running.

I am pretty that the Mac route is the way to go for me as I can migrate accounts to OS X asnd the separate machine means I can use both together while I haven't migrated the data.

I'd say go Linux if you were on a budget, but if you're willing to spend money to build a hefty-pc then why not spend the same cash on a Mac with the option to tri-boot Windows, Linux and OS X ??

I did the previous (built a uber pc) a year or so ago, and immediately missed my Mac I'd sold to aquire the funds. Obviously, you might not feel the same given the situation and background using Linux on your PC but at least you have the option to sell a Mac for decent resale value (I have many times), or you could try splitting the PC down and sell it off bit-by-bit if you didn't like it ;)

If you're only PC is running Ubuntu Edgy as its main O/S and you're getting on ok with it then I say stick with Linux. Its much cheeper and providing everything you want to do on it works then there really is no better alternative.

My personal view is that Windows is expensive and loaded with bugs and spyware and Mac's, fantastic as they are, cost an arm and a leg to upgrade!

Either way, keep the rig you currently have. It'll be brilliant for testing out Linux Distros (as no linux distribution requires an insane rig to run properly). I'm going to pick up a little rig some time this week of similar spec and am going to play around with various distros until I find the right one for me!

OK so what would be the best components to use for building a Linux bsaed system- am I better off going down the nVidia/ Intel route?

Plenty of hardware should work (you can always stick the components in google if you're unsure). Creative if you avoid x-fi (or are willing to wait a few months or so). Stick with nvidia for graphics. Nforce motherboards seem to be well supported, but I don't think they're much of an exception though :) AMD or Intel - it's your choice, depends what's best at the time. General rule I guess is to stick your components in google or ask the Linux community what they think, give examples :)
