mac os, what gesture did this?

i did something but no idea what, it brought up a calc, calendar and something else to use quickly.

any ideas? ive looked through a gestures guide but cant see it.

You moved to the widgets dashboard lol. F4 will do the same thing. Depending on how you have gestures setup its either a 3 or 4 finger swipe from left to right.

3 fingers left or right does nothing on desktop.

Yep four fingers right swipes you to the widget dashboard and four fingers left will swipe between any full screen apps you have open.

Just upgraded to Lion and the multi-finger swipes don't seem to work for me

4 fingers left or right brings up box to cycle through all open windows like alt tab in windows.

I've got an early 2008 macbook, does that make a difference?

Depends on the exact model.
You need an aluminium unibody MacBook or later to get multi-touch gestures. The older machines are restricted to 2-finger gestures I think.
MacBook Pro had support from the early 2008 revision.
All MacBook Airs are supported.
