Mac OSX Software Updates

When performing Software updates is it possible to back up the updates on a external hard disk if so how would I do this? Since my internet connection isn't that great it becomes a pain re updating after formatting or just updating my other Mac systems.

instead of using software update just download the latest 'combo update' from the apple site and use it to update all macs

I see, seem like this will help although updates for programs such as imovie, aperture and so on is there no way to back any of this up to quickly transfer and apply?

You can download all the updates here:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/

If they're already installed and updated just use Time Machine to create a system backup.
