hi hopefully for you people clued up on macs this should be pretty easy to answer

a mate who only has a mac needs to be able to open power point presentations to read at uni and cant afford to buy office for mac at the moment.

what could he download for free(legally) that will do this job on mac os x

sorry to have to ask such a silly question but i have no idea about macs and neither does he tbh

Keynote is probably the best imo.

Loads of great options, effects and it's easy to use if you're from a Powerpoint background :)

Yes, however keynote costs money unless it came with his Mac. If he's looking for a program it didn't come with it. :)

I read the OP and couldn't be bovvered to ninja edit :p;)

I haven't used any of the open office stuff, so I can't comment.. but if there's money to be spent then keynote is the way forward.

Keynote is definetly worth it, it's only £55 new so not exactly the price you would pay for Office.

NeoOffice is the OpenOffice port for Mac OS X, same thing as OpenOffcie but Keynote really is the way to go, it is extremely good and easy to use. Even I managed to make a half decent presentation on my first attempt. :)

Here is a screenshot of mine in action:
