guys, i have two systems and would like to get rid of one.

2007 (2,1) spec:
2 X 3.0GHZ Quad Core Cpu (8cores)
8800GT Graphic Card
8GB DDR2

2009 (4,1) Spec:
2.66 Quard Core CPU (4cores)
GT120 Graphic Card
4GB DD3

which one is better in terms of CPU speed?

thanks

I would keep the 2009, due to it being DDR3 memory, but also because of the face that the 2009 - Nehalem CPU according to reports you can see here are about 10% - 20% faster.

Add to that the expand-ability of the 2009 model, and you have a clear winner!

Quoting the report part i linked you:

"The new [low-end 2.66 GHz] quad-core's score in our overall system performance suite, Speedmark 5, was 16 percent faster than that of the previous 2.8 GHz eight-core Mac Pro. It was also 27 percent faster in our Photoshop tests, and 20 percent faster at Compressor than the older system. . .
Because many applications have a difficult time using even four processors efficiently, the advantage of having eight [cores in the stock high-end 2.26 GHz model] was not apparent in most of the application tests that make up our Speedmark benchmark test suite. In fact, the new eight-core system posted a lower Speedmark score than the quad-core system, and bested it in just one test -- Cinema 4D, where it posted a 28 percent faster time."

thanks nemfoz :)

i'll keep the 2009 so i can upgrade the parts in the future.
the scores on multi core for 2007 mac pro is the winner.

Sell on the 2007, and get some more memory and a better GPU in the 2009.
Those old Xeons in the 2007 will be chewing through the electricity usage. :D

Also for the 2009, i think you could even use a geforce 5xx series in it, which will give it a serious horsepower compared to the old graphics card that was installed. Also an ssd, by using the mounting bracket for it, would be an awesome addition to it. overall, I still believe it's a pretty descent machine for it's age.

We've got a couple of 2010 and a couple of 2012 Mac Pros at work, IT want to replace them but I'm not sure that unless we replace each of them with £6k's worth of iBin's that the performance will be that notable. Sure the PCIE memory will make it appear that the things are super fast but we do mostly rendering from Premiere, After Effects and C4D, and I think that the CPU cores and speeds are the most important element.

I'm trying to get SSDs for them and some flashed 680s to bring the spec up.

i found out over at macrumors forums, that you can upgrade these mac pro's cpu.

Core i7 970, 980, 980X, 990X, Xeon W3670, W3680 and W3690. all are supported :)

I retired my 2008 8 core mac pro last month, replaced with a hackintosh, just because I don't have 4K to spend JUST on an ashtray (not counting the fact I'd need new thundersh*t peripherals etc)

I think the series 2007/8/9 mac pro were the pinacle of practical case design.

I know you can upgrade them, and use new GPUs, but the CPUs despite being 8 of them are quite sucky in comparison to say, a i2600k overclocked... that that was the main reason for me
