Hey guys,

I’m in two minds here regarding macs..

I love the 2013 Mac Pro design, and only will be using it for basic computing (safari, Spotify, rekordbox etc.)

will this still be a “usable” device for several years to come??

Yeah, the trash can :D

for my needs, I’m not overly fussed about the latest OS, I’m thinking along the lines of performance too..

and it’s very upgradable too which is nice.

Still can’t see past my 5.1s

although they are creaking a bit these days my daily in the office is a 6 core with 24th of ram and a 580x running big sur on an nvme and does everything I need work wise

home is a 12 core with 96gb of ram with another 580x running on nvme with big sur

we have a pile of minis and iMacs in the office all intel based and just hoping for a reasonable Apple silicon based replacement for the old Mac Pro’s

something up to 3 grand would be palatable but the current Mac Pro lineups just don’t deliver vfm

Cheese grater over the trash can any day of the week.

If Apple puts M1 Pro/Max into Mac Mini then most can just get that instead, and Mac Pro can really focus on compute heavy workloads with 12/16+ performance cores.

For OPs usecase I'd say most iMacs from the last 5-6 years (assuming it has a SSD) would be better suited. Decent display comes with it.

ended up with a 2018 Mac mini. Perfect for my basic tasks (apart from RekordBox) so happy, its mint condition too.

Im guessing being a 2018 model that it will support at least a few more OS versions to come?

Yeah definitely. At least another 4-5 versions and after that you'll still get security updates for an extra couple of years.

Good thing about that Mac Mini is that you can easily add ram to it if you need to.

Nicely done - I'll take up a lot less space than the Mac Pro.

At least another 4-5 versions
I reckon three versions. Normally I'd say longer but it's because we're in a transition period and I can't see more than another three versions still supporting Intel.

They're still selling Intel macs and will continue to do so until the end of the year (at least). I'd say 3-4 years after the last Intel one is shipped. So 4-5 years in total is my expectation.

I think you're right in 3 years, but the last 2 years will be an incredibly stripped-back support list, with only the very latest Intel Macs on there. To be honest I expect they could even strip it back for macOS 13, supporting only 2017+ Macs... they'll want to push everyone to Apple Silicon.

hey guys,

I love my M1 MINI, but im still getting getting the itch to change it up for a 6,1 Mac Pro..

Seen it for a decent price on anther retailer website.

My main concern is the support for future OS updates..but I don't do anything heavy duty, so surely security will be provided for a couple of years if I can on run Monterey as the latest "official" OS?

Reason im fussing about the MP so much, is I loveee the trash-can design, and im sure for my needs the performance wouldn't be much less than the M1 MINI?

I use Spotify, Spark (mail), Safari and that's about it really..

Wouldn't recommend this at all. I, too, did like the trash can design (even though it was a bad product), but it's an Ivy Bridge Intel CPU. Even the 12-core is significantly slower than M1 and it doesn't have the proper video/audio encoder/decoders required for modern web browsing either. The ST perf is less than a third of M1, web browsing on that will be very slow and watching YouTube at 4K will ramp up the fans. The GPU is also really outdated and the SSD is quite slow. This will be a massive performance downgrade from your M1 MM.

This is also the oldest mac to support the latest MacOS. I'm pretty sure it's getting axed very soon, maybe as soon as next week at WWDC. Apple has already dropped support for all other Ivy Bridge macs except this one and it is definitely next.

I looked at the launch video again today and I can't deny that it's gorgeous. I liked the design when it first came out and I still do. It'd be pretty cool to have one in the corner of the office but it's just the relatively low power compared to the new M1 devices.

Feek! I hate you! :p

You got me doubting the choices again! :(

Well..its official, no support for Ventura on the "trash can". Shame. This rules me out, even though it wouldn't be as practical as my M1, I would have loved it, solely on design..but hey! There we go! :(

I know, I know im resurrecting this thread again..

I just wanted to know, if there are any downsides to installing "unofficially supported OS"..eg. Ventura?

The reason im hung up on the Mac Pro "trash can" is, I love it, basically. And for my uses, I don't suppose that it will b that noticeably slower than my MM M1?
