The Apples is a woodcrest

The 8-core is two Clovertowns.

Get 8-core power from two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Clovertown” processors, or enjoy quad-core performance with two Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors, available in speeds up to 3.0GHz.

the 3.0Ghz quad core clovertown chips in the 8 core mac pro are only available for the Mac pro atm and you cant buy them seperatly anywhere.

I guess if you overclocked some qx6600's then you could get equivelent performance tho. :)

I believe the Intel dual-quad (Octo) used in the top-spec Mac Pro is actually only available to Apple in limited supplies.. AFAIK no other manufacturer has access to this chip :)

FYI: The Mac Pro uses a Xeon chip (used in servers and workstations), whereas the chip you mentioned is the top-spec desktop chip

Yeah I understand that matey. I was just looking at some cpus and noticed this one was clocked to 2.9Ghz whereas the only xeon was much lower.

You have all answered my question now anyway :)

I only ask because I really want to see a MacPro 8core 3Ghz Vs a PC equiv spec head to head benchmark.
