In order to keep the initial cost down is it feasible to order a Mac Pro with just one 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon [which is £320 cheaper] and then source and fit a second 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon at a later stage?? In other words, is the hardware the same for both the single and double 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon systems except for the additional CPU?

Thanks again guys xxx

Yes, but I'm not sure Apple provides both heatsinks if you order a single chip.

It is possible, and yes, it's the same hardware sans a second chip (as you say) :)

Do they not destroy the second socket? precisely so you can't do what you've asked?

I'm not an expert, I just read it on a forum

They used to solder the CPUs to the socket, so you couldn't change them.

The biggest deterant is the lack of secondary CPU cooling, as i'd imagine they'd be hard to come by (as it's custom)

Isn't the 2.8Ghz Xeon E5462 a bit expensive on its own as well? Cheapest I came across it was over £500 inc.
