hi im about to buy my first macbook and want some advice on model. My top price is £800. Apple has refurbished 2014 13" retina 8gb 128gb with all warranties for 800. But for less i could buy myself some older 15" quad core but not retina. Will be used for adobe Muse and light photoshop/lightroom. I wonder what would be better buy. Thanks for any advice.

Just going on the screen, get the retina, as I believe you will get more screen real estate with a retina screen scaled for more space.

Do you get, or have access to, higher education discount as that is a good option for most if you are in that line of work.

Get the best system within your budget. The retina screen is well worth the extra money imo.

It's not just the screen that will be better on the 2014 model, the spec should be considerably better also. I would hazard a guess to say the 15" won't have an SSD, for example.

Bear in mind 128GB disappears pretty quickly if you store any media on it. If you don't mind carrying a usb HDD as well then it's not an issue.

Avoid the older quad-cores from 2011. They'll be people selling freshly "repaired" ones from the replacement programme for duff AMD GPUs. I don't believe the repair is permanent. 2012 non-retina models with the nVidia 650 are fine.

As above, I'd buy the best refurbished rMBP for the budget.

Probably will go with that refurbished 13 inches from apple store. At least warranty will be good. I dont think i have much problem with space, got 2tb storage drive with only 50gb used ;)
i was searching used stuff, and its kinda scary, so much replacement parts for macbooks O_o

The 8 gb RAM will be fine for Photoshop and Lightroom. You can easily add externalstorage for peanuts - less than £40 per tb. I run my 2014 rMBP with 4 gb RAM, and it is the best laptop I've owned by a mile. Battery life in combination with that screen is amazing.

ended up getting this. 50 battery cycles, 500gb SSD, £800 with 1 year warranty
