I did notice that after running my macbook on mains for ages it thraped the battery, then upon starting to use it again as a portable it did indeed improve as you've said so bit of a strange phenomenon there me thinks
I would advise running the battery down then charging it and running iut through proper cycles. I just had to buy a new battery (£101) after having my 15" MBP constantly connected to the mains.
Originally on the first 100 odd cycles my battery did its capacity was at about 6800mAh when it was rated at 6500... Nothing to worry about much as I got a good 3 hours of FM out of it back when it was new
Now 658 cycles (over getting on 2 years) its down to 5995mAh as its max capacity so a bit of fluctuation over time is more than to be expected. It does the battery good to run it down to the reserve every so often to keep it in good nic (there's the apple care guide online somewhere)
