MacBook Cracks

Does it happen if you shut it fast a lot, because it's magnetic. My mates one shuts quite fierce.

Josh

Yeah they are quite strong, I doubt many people are still using floppys but I'm pretty sure they could corrupt one if you held it near by. You can actually stick the Apple remote to the magnets on the lid because of the metal battery inside the remote. I've pinched the skin on my fingers and hands a few times whilst it jumped shut.

Just seen a MacBook on BBC Breakfast News with this fault, was in a story about online fraud and the MacBook in the video had this chunk of plastic missing.

Mine has this problem so I took it to an autherised repair centre, its out of warranty but the guy I gave it too knew all about the problem and said it would be no problem. They have had it for 2 weeks now though because they said they had to keep it while they waited for the part. I called yesterday and they told me apple aren't giving them the part because its out of warranty but they are still trying. Pretty annoying being without my laptop for over 2 weeks, I think its mainly due to the repair centre faffing around.

Yep, mine has just appeared in exactly the same spot. Taking it into my local Apple service centre on Saturday for them to look at. Appears to be caused by the raised bits on the top of the screen bezel impacting when the lid is closed.

I'm hoping they will fix it under warranty.

Found the video, it's right near the end and isn't as clear as it was on TV http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7363221.stm

Hey there, I have noticed that I have the same problem it seems on my macbook on the palm rests, ATM its only cracks but it looks like they could get worse. What do I do about them?

John

I was just curious if anyone else on these forums have had their MacBook suffer from cracking on the top layer? My MacBook suffered from this problem in August 2007 at about 11 months old. I took it to the Apple store and they replaced it under warranty. They replace the whole layer including keyboard and trackpad.

The reason I ask is because my girlfriends MacBook which was purchased in early May 2007 (11 months old) has just developed the same problem in exactly the same place. I’ve read about lots of people with this exact problem on the Internet, it normally occurs on the right but also sometimes the left of the surface. The picture below shows which part breaks.

I'm hoping that if I phone them and tell them about it they can order the part in because its a long way for me to go to get to an Apple store, and I can't do without ir for like 2 weeks, I have coursework I have to do.

Yep, have exactly the same problem on a 2007 US Macbook Black.

Unfortunately I think I may just about be out of warranty :( Will have to check the credit card statements to see when I bought it.

my macbook is showing signs of stress at the cracking points (white lines) also certain areas are becoming quite discoloured, on the trackpad and the right hand side. thing is it's mostly used with an external keyboard and mouse so it's not like it's constantly had wrists resting on it. Do they do anything about colour loss?

It shouldn't matter, as far as I'm aware they'll fix it out of warranty because it's a known design fault.

Just got mine back on Saturday, the topcase has been replaced along with the keyboard (I hate to imaging what crud they found under the keys lol). I may be imagining it but it does feel like a slightly different material perhaps. Will have to see how it goes, I have started being more careful closing the lid though.

The other thing that has disappeared as well is that the case no longer creaks when pressure is put on the sides, ISTR reading somewhere that some case screws were overtightened when fastened up.

Just glad to get it back :)
