I have had my Macbook for about 9 months and its awesome! However last week I turned my Macbook on and it started making unusual noises - sort of sounds like a scratching noise. It then starts up to a gray screen and it's stuck there. There is no mouse pointer and the only thing I can do is turn it off. After hours of trying I managed to get it to start from the OSX disk and run the disk utility but it throws up an error and fails when I try to repair or format the hard drive! At least it is under warranty so hopefully I can get it sorted soon :).

When im at home I keep it on a stand and plug it into an external monitor and connect it to a usb hub to connect the keyboard and mouse.

Am I just unlucky or is the macbook not designed to be used as a desktop for long periods of time?

the hard drive in my macbook has failed twice. its always on the move with me so its to be expected. hopefully you have backups :)

if not: (for next time)

although the last failure I did do a fairly good restore from time machine. but I had both methods in place after losing 3 months of code in the first crash

Mine has just gone too. :(

Fortunately it's still under warranty, and one can boot into OS X from an external firewire drive (my back-up).

My MacBook's HDD died too. Same symptoms. They could do with throwing up an error message rather than an empty grey screen!

Kinda shocked at so many people reporting hdd failing.

Very unlucky I guess, but I would think Apple will have it sorted asap.

Do they sort this thing out in store, or is it a pickup job?

(Just out of interest).

Mine went (old G4 powerbook) some months ago, as annoying as heck, I can tell you. My girlfriend also had a problem with hers, and when she passed it over in a Macstore they wiped it without telling her! She was furious. :o

Mine was the not the original hard drive but one I added later.
