Finally got my Macbook today and it came with a 80gb hard drive. But after getting it all working earlier it says i have 56GB left, is this normal?

I got the 2.0ghz core 2 duo Macbook.

80GB should be roughly about 74GB in binary, 56GB is a bit of a low figure.

Mac OS X should only take up 1-4GBs max, mabye you should do a fresh install perhaps or remove useless stuff like Garageband instruments and iMovie/iDVD templates etc to free up space.

Mine came about 60GB left out of 80GB.

Just drag and drop those unwanted stuff - simple as.

You want everything to work out of a box, Apple got basically all applications in the MacBook for you, have a look around first tho, some programs might be better from your point of view than others.

You can save a lot of space by removing all the unneeded printer drivers. YOu can also use an app called monolingual to strip out all the unneeded language packs that take up gobs of space. If you don't plan on using Garageband you can save a ton of space by removing all the sound libraries that come with it.

Cheers i thought that 56gb seemed a bit low, i thought it was maybe the programs that came with it. I haven't had much time on it so gonna go play about on it now i'm home. Thanks for the tips.

Oh and btw the 10-20 mins i got on it, i loved it :D

Even if i remove programs you said it doesn't free up much space, about 1gb. And removing stuff like drivers and stuff, i need to figure out how to do all this as it's my first mac lol :o

I know it won't be exactly 80gb the drive, but even so, around about 15-20gb used on the apps and os x?? Anyway gonna have a mess about i'll let you know how i get on.

Would you like to direct me to them :p

Also, is there anything on like windows to view the system specs?

They're in /Library/Printers/ Remove the ones you don't think you'll use. If it comes down to it the printer manufacturer's web site can resupply you with anything you may have deleted should you want to install a printer later.

In addition to removing printer drivers, using monolingual can get you 2.2 GiB space very easily. :)

Sure there is. click the apple in the upper left and click "About this Mac" That'll show basic system information. Click for more info and you'll get extremely detailed information about all system properties including hardware and software.

Thanks for all the help, really i should figure it all out myself :)

But my first impressions are i love it, i've used one once or twice but never owned one.

First thing I would do is reinstall OS X and get rid of the GB's worth of useless drivers ;)

Deleting applications from the applications folder isn't quite enough

Removing all the Garageband loops and iDVD/iMovie templates out of your library too should account for about another 4-8 gigs saved. However, after you removed these you'd have to reinstall them to use the respective programs.

Some say OS X is bloated when in reality as I perceive it a) It's the pre-loaded apps that take up most of the space and b) It's not bloat by definition as bloat is when things take up more space than necessary without providing concomitant benefits to the user. In this case we're seeing it just comes with a lot of useful stuff, irrespective of whether or not some of that stuff is bloated.

My 2¢. :)

What's the obsession with having tonnes of free space? Leave the printer drivers, they're useful! I've been able to plug into loads of different printers wherever I take my laptop, it saves me hassle.

Getting rid of Garage Band + Loops and iDVD/Movie + Templates will save a lot of space if you're never going to use them.

Obsession? I was just suprised about it ans also the extra space would come in handy when adding my mp3's on here, and i'll be doing other things requiring a fair amount of space. But to everyone thanks and i'm gonna get rid of the thing i won't use. I'm not going to reinstall OS x just now maybe in a few weeks when i get used to it all, if i need to that is...well time to go play with it even more, i'm sure i'll be back with more questions :D

It takes less than 10 minutes to reinstall OS X .. worth baring in mind :)

That's pretty good, but i'm just gonna play about with it and try everything out and see what i want and don't want then i might ;)

In such a great mood today after getting this, have to say again i'm loving it...just little things, the remote is awesome.

Just curious what temps people with macbooks have been getting. When i watch videos on youtube it seems to heat up pretty fast and the fans come on, is this normal from just watching a video?

I've also had problems with text laging and not going on the screen for a second then coming up...which is kind of annoying me. Will try it in other programs but it;s been happening when i use firefox, also if i stop using firefox and come back to it, it sometimes doesn't let me type and a way of fixing it is opening error console and clearing everything

noob alert: how exactly do you uninstall stuff? :D

i want to get rid of the garage things to free up space (am on 80gb too until i get a 160-200 sata)... is there an equivalent to windows add/remove programs utility? i deleted the none-canon/epson printer drivers from the library ok, but would also like to know for future reference are there any keyboard shortcuts for things like select all i.e. equivalent to ctrl+a?
