Hi guys,

Looking at upgrading the drive in my older white (9400m) macbook and am looking at two drives, the Samsung Spinpoint M7 640GB and the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB.

Would there be any reason to choose the Seagate over the Samsung?

Cheers

Well that Seagate isn't very good, if you're getting a 50GB drive then make it the Hitachi 7K500 or the Seagate Momentus XT (has a small SSD included). The M7 is 5400rpm so it's not going to seem as fast even though it has larger platters.

What's wrong with the Seagate? The reviews suggest it's pretty good. Not too bothered about the M7 being 5400rpm as my current drive spins at that and is fine.

Don't really want to spend more than 70 notes.

It performs rather poorly compared to other drives despite being 7200rpm.

I can highly recommend the 7K500, less than £70 and very nippy. Wish there was a 640GB version but I find 500GB okay.

I recently bought a "Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400RPM SATA-II 8MB Cache" from OcUK, works like a dream and is dead silent. Definitely recommend it.
