macbook help needed

My gf was using her mac when all of a sudden it locks up, she switches it off after no response for a couple of minutes.

When she goes to turn it on again all she is greeted with is a white screen, along with the fans making a lot of noise.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong?

Hard-drive and or mainboard dead.
