Macbook on a windows-type network - Exchange?

My guess would actually be that the person has Apple Sharing enabled. Just make sure you have "Personal Sharing" and "Printer Sharing" disabled in your Sharing Prefs.
In the old days Macs used Appletalk for their LAN traffic. Latterly they used a TCP/IP stack and Appletalk in parallel and now modern Macs have pretty much ditched Appletalk and use afp over TCP/IP. This is probably the "nasty network traffic" your sysadmins are referring to :)

good morning =)

I tried to those settings in the mail account settings but unfortunately it isn't working =( It just says (Not Connected) beside the account name in folders. I used the following settings :

Exchange server : https://10.0.0.6:444/exchange which works fine in Safari as a URL

The 10.0.0.6 is how we access the web access internally, is this correct as a setting?

This DAV requires a secure connection (SSL) ticked
Override default DAV port : 444

EDIT - after I removed printer sharing and personal sharing from the 'Sharing' utility, and restarted, this is now working!!!! My only complain is that its now been updating inbox for 40 mins or so :P Maybe this is normal first time

Thanks all for ** help xD

I think the sharing comments were aimed at the guy who had his admins complaining about network traffic rather than your email problem.. that's what you get for reviving a thread from the middle ages ;) Glad you got it sorted, changing the settings and restarting probably did it.. it can be rather slow to sync up the first time around.

im reviving this thread once agian lol.

It is working, however I have a few concerns.

What sort of delay should I expect through entourage? Reason I ask is that there have been no new emails for 3 hours now, and it still says on the bottom right 'Updating Sent Items'

Thanks

Has it syncronised anything at all? It all depends on how big your mailbox is and how fast the connection to the server but you should be able to see folder lists and emails almost straight away. It hasn't opened a dialog moaning about the certificate in the background has it?

the folders are all there and these are plenty of emails in inbox sent items and deleted items too, its just not receiving any new items for some reason (since 10am really), and yes i do get a notification about a root certificate when i first open entourage :S

edit - sending of items works fine and i receive it in less than 30 seconds in my outlook on this PC, just seems to be incoming to the mac thats the problem :S

Do you get the mails if you hit send/receive? It might not bother doing it automatically until it's finished syncing all the folders. To be honest, we run Entourage and Outlook side by side and Entourage normally wins when it comes to new mails appearing :)

nope nothing happens when I click on send receive..unless there is a new email to send .

Maybe there is something I'm missing in the advanced settings? ie the LDAP and public server part? :S

Well if it's downloading email then everything should be fine.. if you go to the Window menu and Progress you can see what it's up to and cancel operations, it might have queued checking for new mail until it's fully synced.

heres what the error message says exactly :

Unable to establish a secure connection to mail.xxxxxx.gi because the correct root certificate is not installed.

Also something pops up regarding the keychain :S
Microsof tEntourage wants to use keychain "login", i assume the password is the users account password, but this doesn't work :S

The secure connection thing isn't anything to worry about, even when it says it can't secure the channel it will :)

You should buy a Mac support contract off my company :p

lol yea xD thanks beepcake uve been very helpful xD

something weird is happening now tho, hope i havent f'd anything up.

For some reason the passwords are no longer saving, even if I click on save password :S bah

ok sorry for being a pain in the ass but I got another problem :/ I deleted the mail account and created a new one from scratch, used the same settings as described above...and am now having the same problem where no mail folders are showing at all and it is 'Not Connected', well done me =(

EDIT -Ignore this post :P sorted

lol =D everything seems to be working hunky dory :) I noticed one thing though, when i added the account again from scratch, it started from the most recent emails and thats when i saw all of the received emails for the day that were previously missing. It doesn't seem to check for new email however until the synchronization is completely finished. This persons mailbox is massive so I just left it overnight :P

well..the sync's completely finished. And I am still baffled. If i create a new email from the mac and send, it goes through straight away and I receive it successfully on my PC. But there are no new emails coming through. I don't understand why when I first create the account, it will bring in new emails, but any emails that were sent to the mac recipient AFTER creation of the account just do not come through. I don't understand it :S
