Right I wanted to connect the optical output of my xbox 360 into my macbook so I can have sound when its connected up to a TFT monitor. The picture is fine and comes up on the monitor using the VGA cable. However the optical output from the cable is connected to my macbook using its optical intput jack. I can see in the preferences that a signal is getting through but I cant hear it coming through the internal speakers.

Am I doing something wrong or is it impossible to get the input to come straight out of the speakers? Is there an application out there which lets me do this?

Thanks

Is the option to turn on Digital Sound on?

Not sure if the Macbook has this option in System Preferences but there is usually a tickbox which allows the signal to be heard. Think of the control panel in windows... some things are muted by default
