I use my MBP for playing my music wirelessly using Airport, Surfing the internet, Video and Photo work which the hardware is more than able to do. No hanging when loading and closing applications very snappy overall performance. Now I know this kit is not ment for gaming as such but I know it is pretty able for example I have just played World of Warcraft now within 30 seconds of loading up the fans have sped up to cool the system now the noise of those fans and the percentage they must be running at feels cruel to the machine and unsustainable. Even with light 2d Applications such as games from the app world the fans speed up ridiculously this cannot be good for the overall life span of them. Are the 15 and 17inch MBP the same in this respect since it seems a really bad idea in my opinion to thrash the fans like this for long periods of time.

I get the same on my old Macbook 2009 Unibody when trying to play CSS or TF2.

I think its to be expected, if you think about it, how small are the fans inside? 60mm? 40mm? It's going to be loud. I suppose you could bypass and manually control the fan speed so that it doesn't increase, then again it increases for a reason. :o

Nope, just Lion on my iMac going for a fresh install this morning too I managed to get the free copy of Lion for my iMac but missed the deadline to grab a free copy with my MBP can I use the same installer for my MBP or is it cleverly licensed for one machine?

Yes I mean the noise is not the concern I had a Antec 900 I could put up with noise it just feels that I shouldnt be playing anything which is thrashing my MacBook like that but even applications from app world the fans speed up ridiculously.

It's due to not having a discrete GPU. Mine is the same and it's why I don't do any gaming on it all. Install iStat Pro widget on your dashboard and have a look at CPU temps when the fan starts spinning up.

Yeah I mean I dont really bother either I have my Xbox and play some games on the bigger brother iMac but I was just trying and noticed this from even simple you know.. iPhone style apps. So what your saying is both the 15 and 17inch models regarding fan speed and noise it would be a completely different story?

Played for ten minutes had a CPU temp of 85 and Fan speed of just under 6000rpm.. now Ill pass using this for anything graphically demanding.

The fans will still spin up on the 15 & 17's but it wont be as noticeable as it is on the 13. The 13" unfortunately just isn't suited to gaming but can handle pretty much anything else thrown at it.

80c and 6k RPM is reaching the max. It won't really get above 85c on 6200rpm (max). But for it to get that hot... something is going on which isn't quite right - and I imagine WoW is doing it.

When you have a CPU and a GPU integrated into the same die, dissipating the heat becomes a lot less efficient than having them on 2 separate chips spread apart.

Thanks for your input. Definitely makes sense.

Im also idleing at 47c 2000 RPM whilst surfing the web in a quite warm room 24c in sunny Sheffield right now! I imagine if I had switched my MacBook off after the load I would be running slightly cooler as the Enclosure was still roasting.

I regularly play TF2 on my 13". I do intend on building a desktop in the near future but I don't really worry too much. Turns out the Intel graphics can handle TF2 pretty well so I don't think I'm using it out of place to play what the hardware can handle.

But are your fans not running on full whack throughout the game? The noise disheartens me and makes me feel like im thrashing the thing.

I have the 2.7GHz i7 13" MBP, my cpu temperature reached 90c fans were 6000RPM. That was benchmarking the system using cinebench so its kind of expected, but I was still surprised at the 90c!

On a slightly related note, ever since I've installed ClickToFlash, I hardly hear the fan or indeed feel the laptop heat up now. That POS software from Adobe just EATS CPU cycles like anything :o
