Just purchased a MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 from Apple Direct in the UK.

I am a bit concerned with the cpu temps while just browsing the internet. With temperature Monitor I'm seeing 66-77'c on each core and the base of the laptop is too hot to sit on my lap. The two fans are sitting around 2000 rpm and are silent.

While I appreciate its a fairly high spec processor I wouldn't expect these sort of idle temps while just surfing the net.

Is this normal?

Very pleased other than this issue.

well i have only had my macbook pro for about 5 days, but mine runs at around 40'c idle, so would say thats rather high :(

could you answer me a question? :) ...
... does your mbp make a rather worrying noise when you insert disks? almost like its eating the disk? its fine once its in, but sounds rather loud for an insert noise, lol

how long you had yours? if your worried about it, give them a ring, they are very happy to help :)

cheers

Sounds about right - they run quite warm. My Rev A 1.83 is currently idling along at 75C with the fans at 1700rpm.

The CPUs are spec'd upto 95C so it's not a problem. When the fans ramp right up you'll get 4500rpm and a lot of noise.

It's a slot loader, they all usually make a noise when loading or checking for a disc in the drive. (Well my car CD Player does and the slot loading NEC stacker CD-ROM drive I had in the late 90's did as well)

I use an iCurve on my desk which helps keep the temperatures down, and the monitor at a more comfortable height. At the moment it's on my kitchen table hence the 75C. Usually it's around 60-65C, nasty badly coded CPU hogging flash sites set it off on a benny however.

The hottest thing in my 2.8GHz iMac is the airport card funnily enough.

I've had it running for 6hrs while I surf, listen to music and email and it's peaked at 57C (AirPort), 39C (CPU) so yes, I would say the MBP cores seem hot.

Unfortunately I sold my 17" MBP but I can't remember it being too hot to have on my lap unless I was encoding some video or running heavy apps.

Yes id does make a noise like its eating the disk. Glad its normal!

I receieved the MacBook last Thursday, 20th Dec 2007.

Anyone find they can't work with the pro on your lap?

Mine is far too hot.

I'm thinking there might be an issue with the heatsink compound. Too much / too little?

Everything else is perfect. No other issues and I love the backlit LED glossy screen.

I'll give apple a ring.

Yup call them.

I have manual fan control and I have worked with it on my lap at 40-50C and if it gets too hot I ramp up the minimum fan speeds from 1000 to 3000 RPM or higher.

ATM im sitting at 30C and 1511RPM

My MBP 2.2ghz 15" idles around 40C when web browsing, music, light tasks, so Id say yours sounds a little hot. However since it is new, maybe give it a few days and let it "burn" in, maybe run a few processor intensive tasks.

Other than that, you could use manual fan control as suggested above.
I use smcFancontrol http://www.conscius.de/~eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html
(not sure if its Leopard ready , Im running Tiger)

MacBooks tend to run cooler to the touch than the Pro - the Pro uses the aluminum case as a heatsink. Plastic on the other hand is a poor conductor of heat ;)

At the moment :
Ambient - 23C
CPU - 60C
Heatsink - 40C
Case Bottom - 36C
