Hello Mac experts :)

I've decided to go for a MacBook Pro. But I'm having trouble deciding which 15" version to go for. Is the price justified for the extra processor speed and graphics power?

The MacBook Pro will be the machine I use abroad so a bit of everything really... from typing documents to using Lightroom for my post-processing for photos. Maybe a bit of EVE Online as well.

Whilst I want to keep my costs down, I do want it to last though (yeah I know tall order :p)

Thanks.

I was in the same situation as yourself, i opted for the 2.4Ghz 256mb option, as i don't think the price is justified for the 0.2ghz increase :) also i bought the 2gb ram upgrade so it now has 4gb of ram and it flies. (Don't buy apple ram ;)

Also you can replace the standard hdd for 7200 drive i.e. the seagate momentus.

My thoughts are get 15.4 256mb 15.4" Version in my eyes i think it's the best bang for buck.

^ Thanks for that. Hopefully them refurbished models will still be around when I get around to buying it in the next week or two. At the same price as the 2.2Ghz I'd have to kick myself not to :)

Is a HDD upgrade an essential purchase? Will there be a noticeable difference between the Seagate and the stock one?

I've just ordered the (17") 2.6 256mb 2GB 200GB-7200.

I'll be upgrading the RAM to 4GB myself.

I was under the impression that you void your warranty if you changed the HDD, it's only Macbooks that the HDD is user-upgradable.

I went for the 17" because it's going to be a desktop replacement but the version of the 15" you're looking at seems to be the one to go for.

^ Yeah you are right about the hdd on the MBP, but i wanted a 7200rpm in mine and did not want to pay apple prices, there are some great how to guides out there and if you are careful there should be no problems but yes it does void your warranty.

Agree with this, the 0.2Ghz extra isn't worth £160, you wont notice much difference.

What people haven't discussed is the difference in GPU performance (a requirement for gaming!).

The faster 15" has a faster GPU IIRC. Also the 17" GPU is clocked quicker too to make up for the additional resolution (although I remember seeing it performed quicker in GPU tasks compared to the 15").
