Hi guys,

got home from work today, went to turn on the laptop and have got no display!
I can hear it startup ok and can even log into it. Its a 2.4ghz C2D version with the Geforce 8600M graphics card which I think it whats gone wrong with it.

I am just wondering since Apple have extented the warranty on these do I need the reciept or does it not matter? as I cant find mine anywhere :( Ive had it for around 18months now.

cheers

They didn't ask for the receipt when I took mine in with the same problem; they fixed it completely in about 3 days and it's been fine since. I'd just book an appointment at your local Genius bar and they should sort it out for you for free :)

Thanks Arty, booked it in. Should I remove the additional memory I have installed? will they wipe the hdd? cant backit up now! DOH

Try plugging an external monitor in to grab any important stuff.

I very much doubt they'll need to do anything but replace the backlight/anything screen related though.

I'd just take out your HDD and keep it with you if at all possible. The problem should still manifest itself without the HDD present.

Logic boards died by the sounds of it. I had a similar experience where everything seems on but nobodys home.

You can probably look to the 8600M as the culprit.

Look out for the following symptoms:

* Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
* No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on

On mine, they didn't wipe the HDD, and I also had additional memory left installed which they assured me would be left totally intact - it was.

In order to back data up from mine, I used a Firewire cable to boot it up in target disk mode from my Mac Mini, then copied all the data off and deleted anything remotely 'private' from the laptop before giving it to Apple. I also created a new test user account with no password for them to use.

They may allow you to use target disk mode in the store to save data off, particularly if you go in with an external disk to save things off to, but I'm not sure as potentially it could take some time if you have lots to back up.

Took it down the Apple in MK and they said it was the logic board so will be replacing it :)
Ive already bought the newer MBP so when I get the other one back its going to be up for sale lol
