Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade my 13" 2009 unibody Macbook Pro HD. I curently have a 500GB one installed, but would like a total of 1GB.

My questions are...

1. Having never done upgrades to macs before, I assume the MBP only has space for 1 HD? So I couldn't just get an extra 500GB?

2. Are all SATA 2.5" internal HD's compatible? Would this be compatible for example...

Thanks in advance :-)

Thanks but I just need one. It would be good to know if all SATA 2.5" drives are compatible with the MBP so I can go ahead and order the above...

Any 2.5" SATA drive will work.

They come in two heights - 9.5mm and 12.5mm. The Apple fitted drives are 9.5mm. Large capacity drives such as your preferred 1TB tend to be 12.5mm to fit in the extra platters. I'm not sure if it will fit, if I does it'll be a close thing looking at my 2008 aluminium MacBook.

I put exactly that drive in my 2011 MBP 15 inch yesterday and it works perfectly. I went the optibay route (well, actually a cheap chinese rip-off of an optibay) - if you're not that confident on the inside of a laptop the primary drive is very, very easy to replace compared with replacing the superdrive.

Put the very same drive in my 2010 15" MBP last week. It fits perfectly.

I have mine in an Optibay and an SSD in the main HDD slot now, but I did install the 1Tb in the HDD slot first and it fits nicely. IIRC it's a 9.5mm height drive anyway, certainly don't remember it being larger than the 500Gb original drive.

hi folks

i just ordered a new HDD for my MBP

whats best practice for replacing them.

1. prepare beforehand (connect the hdd externally to format and install OSX, transfer programs and documents?) this was the way i was thinking

2. replace it first
3. clone existing? (if so which program? :)

i've went from a 250gb to 500gb

thanks
