Hi all you lovely people on the overclockers forum!

I'm a new user an this is my first post!

I'm having problems with my new Macbook Pro. It is randomly locking up when doing something as simple as running a web browser. Its a complete system lockup. I physically have to power it off.

I decided to run Apple Hardware Test (from the first installation cd) to discover that within 2 mins 36 seconds there was an error: 4mem/2/400000000:466ed10

So there is blatantly a hardware issue hear.

I contacted the 'Bay* seller and the reply i received was :

Hi Scott

The unit was brand new unopened when you got it

So I can give you a refund but it will not be in full

As I would have to sell it as used

*Please don't blast me for buying off the 'bay i have learnt my lesson and will not be buying anything value.

Any information /suggestions would be great.

Thanks Scott

it has nothing to do with buying from ebay

that memory error could prolly just be some badly seated RAM so try taking it out and putting it back in.

if it really was BNIB it is still under warranty and you can just take it to the apple store or call apple support with the error code.

If it was brand new and boxed you will still have warranty providing it isn't over a year old.

If you return it to Apple they will sort it for you, they are very good with warranty issues as far as I know.

Edit: What model is it? And what exactly does it do, completely freeze and that's it?

Take the battery out from the bottom, remove the two RAM sticks and then re-seat them ONE at a time.

Test the hardware from the CD again, and hopefully both sticks will pass individually and then together.

I'm guessing the RAM isn't seated correctly :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I phoned the customer support and talked through the error he identified it as a common memory error.

He suggested the same thing, re-seating the ram and gave me information on getting it checked out.

So i took ot the battery and removed and tested each stick one a a time. The first stick passed and the second stick showed errors.

So ill be taking it so Scotsys (system diagnostics and repairs) tomorrow. Its only 5 mins from the house so no big deal.

Thanks Scott

Can you provide a link to the auction? I'd like to see the one 'bay auction for a Macbook Pro that actually wasn't a scam. I refuse to believe one exists!

I constantly sell my MBP when a new model is released..

In fact, I've sold 3 on the bay, all gone seamlessly :)
