MacBook Pro Question

Hi all,

I have been looking for a new laptop for some time, and I have pretty much decided to get a MacBook Pro (seeing as I can run windows on it anyways)

The question I have is,

Should I get the bottom range one? or the middle range one?

... i dont have enough money for top range, plus i only want a 15" one :)

the only difference between the two is the processors, and graphics card, are they really worth all the extra money?

Nope, but you will probably want to upgrade to 2GB of memory (the lower one only has 1gb). Which will cost an extra £120 over the standard spec.

Hey,

What are you looking to do with the MBP?

The extra graphics memory is useful for gaming, running a large external display, picture and video editing.

IMO the difference in processor speed in negligible it only being 170mhz plus they have the same L2 Cache of 4MB's.

So by getting the bottom range you can save money that you could spend on RAM perhaps 2GB's would be really ideal, but 1GB is OK as well.
 
oh yea, forgot about the memory, 2gb would be nice :)

I wouldn't really be using it for gaming, would mainly be editing photos, videos, and making websites (currently developing in C# asp.net, therefore windows is a must)

Another question i have is, would you recommend the glossy or the matt screen?

I've been looking at MBP's a lot lately, and would suggest going to an Apple store before buying.

I was dead set on a 17" glossy MBP, looked at it in the Apple shop and am now going for the 15" matte. The 17" looks a little too large for a laptop, and the glossy screen looks amateurish! I could see my reflection all the time, and thought the matte was a lot nicer. I'm sure a lot of people will say otherwise, which is why you really need to go to an Apple store (or just PC world and compare an LCD with a glossy and a matte display)...
 
I have been reading up about the glossy vs matte, and most people say glossy for people that just want to watch movies and look at pictures, and matte for people that actually want to edit video and edit pictures, therefore i'd say the matte would be better for me (i'll be spending most of my time in photoshop :p)

Like you say tho, i guess a trip to my local apple store would solve the issue :)

p.s. someone said the glossy screen are actually cheaper to make, and are more likely to break ... altho i don't know how true this is ...
 
Not sure about which screen is cheaper to manufacture

As for Vista at the moment I don't it is officially supported by Apple, it doesn't seem to list it on the Boot Camp site. I think Vista Beta's did work previously.

If you fancy using Parallels officially you have to buy Vista Business or Ultimate not sure due to the new EULA gibberish.
 
I have a MBP with the 15" glossy screen. It's amazing. Yes, you can see reflections in it, but the blacks are BLACK and it's brilliant for photo editing. I use photoshop a lot and this gives far better colour reproduction than my 19" posh Xerox monitor.

I wouldn't bother with the processor upgrade, but get 2Gb RAM and the graphics upgrade if you can stretch to it.

If you used Crucial's config tool then you are golden. Just pay careful attention to how the Macbook memory is installed - if it already comes in a pair then you will have one to sell.
 
I highly recommend from Crucial, it is a little more pricey then others but is very good.

Have bought from them for Mac and PC always worked straight away.
