MacBook Pro repair advice (Wipe Machine?)

Hello

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro and I've never been too fond of it. It's recently developed a hardware fault where the screen dies if you open on the display. I'm currently using an external monitor but it's really annoying so I booked a Genius Bar appointment to find out what the repair cost is.

In current times, it seems it's just a 'drop off' service, which is understandable but a bit rubbish. My options are basically repair the MacBook or get a new portable device.

So my questions:

Before I take the MacBook in, should I completely wipe the Mac?

Is it even worth the bother? If they are about to charge me £500 to just get the screen working I anticipate I'm better off just buying something new.

Cheers.

I wouldn’t wipe it, set up a new user account called Apple and give them the password then delete that account once it’s fixed.

@Nitefly how did this go in the end?
They repaired the screen for free. I also got them to repair the keyboard which has sticky / broken keys, although it was a bit annoying as they were supposed to be doing both at the same time and forgot to do the latter so I had to send it off again. It took about 10 days each time I sent it off.

But yes, ended up with a brand new (old model) MacBook essentially, so a good result.

Good result in the end then. You might pay a bit of a premium for Apple products but the after-care service has always been top-notch for me.

He only got a free repair though because they identified a manufacturing defect

I’ve been to the Apple store a few times and wouldn’t say their service is extraordinary.

I’ve had my fair share of good and (really quite) bad service.

Glad you got it sorted OP - free repair is a result!

To be fair, defects which tend to develop after 12 months don’t tend to get covered by many companies. Apple are quite unique in that.

If you bought it from Apple and say you're covered under Consumer Law, they'll repair it pretty much indefinitely.

Three repairs and they'll replace it too.
Not strictly true - far more lenient then other companies but not as simple as you make it out to be at all lol

Im not saying they tend to, but rather they should.

One off issues are just that, but a manufacturing defect causing multiple consumers to face a similar issue (eg the keyboard) should be repaired :-)

Don’t get me wrong, though, it’s good they’re proactive about it, rather than just trying to brush it under the carpet.

The policy admittedly might have changed very recently but it was certainly the case until very recently that three repairs would make you eligible for a replacement device. Having AppleCare helped although I had a replacement via consumer law
Oh, CRU rules are still the same, but CL claims were tightened to be more in line with the law and less lenient
