MacBook Pro snap on case

Weakened hinges? Not sure why they'd weaken hinges, they aren't heavy. The only thing I noticed is that my machine got bloody hot so I took the bottom one off, but it still gets bloody hot without it.

I have a cheap £10 matte black case from eBay which I use to protect from scratches, so far so good, I've taken it off a couple times too and it hasn't scratched it so far :)

I see a lot of Macs with loose hinges that have hard cases on. It doesn't happen to all of them, but it happens to a noticeable amount.

Tends to be but isn't entirely confined to the cheaper, thicker, eBay types.

Just got thin case from ebay, £5.69 from seller name -supertrade4you (Smart Rubberized Hardshell Hard Case Cover with Keyboard Skin for Apple MacBook)
Really thin, not much of a protection from drops, but will work well against scratches from moving around. Snaps lightly and does not effect opening closing.

I had a speck one. Looked great, but somehow grit got in and it scratched my macbook pro. Whenever I took it off I ensure great care was taken in cleaning both cover and mac before reassembling, but must have been the travelling which did it.

Wife bought one of these snap on rigid covers and it got red hot when watching HD movies.
The unibody aluminium is the heatsink and so doen't wrap it in an insulator.
They can also cause dark etching marks in the aluminium where they have rubbed for months. In my opinion avoid and just use a neoprene slip case inside a shoulder case. And be careful with it.
