Something to be aware of is that products like Sophos don't just scan for viruses, if we can even pin that definition down any more. It will prevent you from accidentally installing applications that don't really serve a useful purpose, but aren't technically viruses.
I also advise clients to have AV clients installed regardless of platform they are using, because the last thing you want to do is receive an infected file from a freelancer and pass it along to your client, as it reflects incredibly badly on you. Running something like Sophos on your Mac greatly reduces the chances of this happening.

I posted in this thread a while back and since owning my imac for 4 months I've not installed any AV.
