Hey,

My dad had an iMac for a short period of time and I was really interested in having a play with it. The main reason I've kept using Windows is because of my games. I cannot play FPS such as COD4 on my ps3 because I prefer keyboard and mouse.

If I give up my Windows PC it means giving up pc gaming for at least a year, however recently I've not played pc games that much. I've been building websites and working through the constant flow of uni work. I've only really played COD4 and Orange box. Even then I only played SP with maybe 20 hours of MP. The Macs just seem a lot more... sexy. Don't really know how else to describe it haha. Don't get me wrong, I can live with Vista but Macs just seem to have programs which are polished, even the free ones you can find.

Anyway, to my point. Is it worth buying a MacBook Pro now or waiting until say June/July time? I've heard June is when the new iPhone will be announced so I'm guessing there is an Apple event around then and they might do some price drops or new models. I'm looking at the 15" 2.4GHz model. I think they're bending you over the table to be asking for an extra £300 for 0.1GHz more.

Does anyone know the figure for higher education discount too?

Thanks.

P.s. how much do you think I could get for a custom built (used obviously), C2D E6600, 4GB DDR2 RAM with 8800GT?

1.If youre not rushed about getting a new Mac, I would wait till June to see what new machines are on offer.

You can also install Windows on your Mac using Bootcamp, the Macbook Pro is still very capable of playing the latest games albeit at lower resolutions.

2.With HE discount the base model is £1104.50. Price drops are unlikely, but if you wait till June, you might get a small speed bump/ newer model, for the same money.

3. If you post your setup in the Price Checks forum in Members Market, you might to able to find more help for pricing.

hope that helps a bit

I'm in the same boat - really enjoyed my imac 17", but gave it to my in-laws and went back to a gaming PC because I just couldn't give up HL2... [and it saves a fortune in petrol and time troubleshooting their old PC!]

So now, with a larger family on the way, I need to make space - and the MBP seems perfect, I'm thinking the 2.5GHz with the 6MB L2 cache, and the 8600 graphics with the 512 of DDR3 RAM. I think if I buy the lower spec, I may regret it in the longer term....

My question is this: Compared to my desktop, [AMD dual core 2GHZ with 4GB RAM and an X1950Pro], how will games like HL2 and Bioshock run?

I bought my very first Mac not long ago, a chiny MacBook Pro. I'm telling you what you already know but its awesome - i'm even loving leopard!

I bought a 17" Hi-Res 2.6ghz with 200gb 7200rpm disk and 2gb of RAM. The thing which got me is the enormous screen resolution of 1600x1200... This absolutely makes the laptop for me and was a big positive.

(Saved a bunch of cash by shopping in the US too :D)

I love it!

The Macbook Pros currently have the Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT graphics card.

This runs Bioshock fine at a mix of medium/high settings, and you will have no problem running HL2/Orange Box on max settings.

The graphics card may change in June if new models come out, but for now, the current graphics card in the MBP is very capable.

A few benchmarks here. http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp02.html

Also you will need to install windows via Bootcamp if you want to play games like Bioshock or Orangebox as there is no mac version.
