Hi guys, for a Uni course I'm looking to get a Macbook pro. I'm just wondering, what should i be looking for and what should I avoid? Some of them only boost 256mb of graphics RAM, some of 9600m gt's, some have 8600m gt's. Which way should i lean?

Most importantly, what are you hoping to use it for?

You also would quality for the Higher Education store [being at Uni], which can significantly reduce costs of getting a Mac.

It's a multimedia course, so I'm going to be using the Adobe suites, some animation programs and doing a bit of word processing. It's not really a games machine as I have a computer (in sig). However, capability for games (when in doubt) would be appreciated

The specs have been updated since you last checked, they sport up to 512MB VRAM, and some decent discrete graphics.

What you describe is what the MBP is built for.

roger. One more question :)
What is the idle memory consumption of the Mac OS like? I've only ever used Vista which is a RAM hog, is it worth getting 4 gigs instead of 2?

my advice if you can afford it go for the top end 15" the 17" is to big and getting the better spec is always worth it as when you sat there rendering out something you will wish you had spent the extra cash and yer buy it using one of the uni computer or from there network as i think u get like 15% off

Yeah, I was seriously tempted by the top 15 inch one, but I'm not sure if my funds can stretch that far. Even with the Uni discount I get it's still about 1,450 quid, and that's an awful lot of weeks without food. Is the top end 15 inch that much faster than the bottom end one?

from my experience, OS X likes RAM.

It doesn't run as bad as vista might on the bare minimum, but if you can afford the extra it's well worth it. I have 3GB and constantly run a virtual windows machine right alongside OS X to code.

You will deffinately need 4gig ram and video card with 256mb or higher.

I did my degree in Multimedia Computing, Mac or PC with 2gb ram isn't good enough these days.
